When Is the Best Time to Trim Trees in Central Texas?

Last updated: November 2026

When is the best time to trim trees in Central Texas? For oaks, trim in mid-winter (December through January) or the heat of mid-to-late summer, and avoid February through June, when the beetles that spread oak wilt are most active. Most other yard trees can be trimmed any time of year, though late winter, before new growth, is ideal. Dead or hazardous branches should come down whenever you spot them.

Why does oak wilt change the trimming calendar?

Oak wilt is a fungal disease that kills live oaks and red oaks across Central Texas. Sap beetles carry it to fresh cuts and wounds, and they're most active in spring. That's why Texas A&M Forest Service recommends avoiding oak pruning from February through June and painting every fresh oak wound right away, whatever the season.

What about non-oak trees?

Pecans, elms, crape myrtles and most ornamental trees can be trimmed year-round. Late winter is a good time because the branch structure is easy to see and the tree is ready to push new growth in spring.

What signs mean a tree needs trimming now?

  • Dead, cracked or hanging branches
  • Limbs rubbing the roof or gutters
  • Branches blocking the sidewalk, driveway or view of the street
  • Dense canopy shading out the grass underneath

Why trim trees at all?

Overgrown trees can become unhealthy and grow in the wrong direction. Regular trimming keeps them healthier, safer and better looking, and it lets more sun reach your lawn so the grass underneath stays thick.

Frequently asked questions

Can I trim oak trees in spring in Texas?

It's best to avoid it. Texas A&M Forest Service recommends not pruning oaks from February through June, when the beetles that spread oak wilt are most active. If an oak must be cut then, paint the wound right away.

Do I need to paint tree wounds?

On oaks in Central Texas, yes. Painting fresh cuts on oaks helps keep the insects that spread oak wilt away from the wound. Most other trees don't need it.

How often should trees be trimmed?

Most yard trees benefit from a trim every few years, or sooner if branches are rubbing the roof, blocking walkways, or hanging over the driveway.
