How often should you mow your lawn in Central Texas? Most lawns in Uhland, San Marcos, Lockhart and South Austin need mowing weekly during peak growing season (late spring through summer) and every two weeks when growth slows in early spring and fall. The rule that decides it: never cut off more than one-third of the grass blade at a time. If your grass outgrows that between cuts, you need to mow more often.
Why does the one-third rule matter?
Cutting more than a third of the blade at once shocks the grass. It loses the leaf surface it uses to feed itself, the roots get shallower, and bare or thin spots show up. In a Texas summer that thin turf is exactly where weeds move in. Mowing on a steady schedule keeps every cut small and the lawn thick.
When is weekly mowing the right call?
- Peak season, when warm-season grasses like St. Augustine and Bermuda grow fastest
- After a stretch of rain, when growth jumps
- Fertilized or irrigated lawns that grow faster than average
- Homes being shown or listed for sale, where the yard needs to look sharp every day
When is bi-weekly mowing enough?
- Early spring and fall, when growth slows down
- Shady yards and slower-growing grasses
- Dry stretches or watering restrictions, when the lawn is barely growing
How high should you cut your grass?
| Grass type | Typical mowing height |
|---|---|
| St. Augustine | 2.5 to 4 inches |
| Bermuda | 1 to 2 inches |
| Zoysia | 1 to 2 inches |
Cutting a little higher in the hottest part of summer helps the grass shade its own roots and hold moisture.
What does a mowing visit include?
Student Loan Payment Lawn Care has mowed lawns around Uhland since 2011, and every visit is more than just the mower pass. Our lawn care services include edging along beds, sidewalks and patios, trimming around fences and trees, and blowing off decks, driveways and curbs. We offer both weekly and bi-weekly schedules, and you can switch as the season changes. See what's included in a lawn care service for the full list.
Which schedule should you choose?
If your grass looks shaggy before the second week is up in summer, go weekly. If it still looks clean at two weeks, bi-weekly saves you visits. When you're not sure, we'll look at your yard and recommend one, no contract required.

Frequently asked questions
Is bi-weekly mowing enough in Central Texas?
Bi-weekly mowing works for slower-growing lawns, shady yards, and the cooler months. During peak summer growth most Central Texas lawns need weekly mowing to avoid cutting off more than a third of the blade.
How short should I cut St. Augustine grass?
St. Augustine is usually kept around 2.5 to 4 inches. Cutting it shorter stresses the grass in Texas heat and opens the door to weeds.
Do I need to mow in winter?
Warm-season grasses go mostly dormant in winter, so mowing drops to an occasional cleanup cut, mainly to knock down winter weeds and keep the yard tidy.
